Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority said that at least 68 people died when a domestic flight crashed in Pokhara on Sunday. Nepal’s worst aviation accident in the small Himalayan is the worst one in the last 30 years.

Hundreds of people were searching the hillside where the Yeti Airlines flight from the capital Kathmandu, carrying 72 people, crashed.

Rescue workers were seen scurrying around broken parts of the plane on local TV. Some of the ground near where the plane crashed was burned, and flames could be seen.

How is this Nepal’s worst aviation accident?

The Aviation Safety Network database showed that this is Nepal’s deadliest crash since 1992, when 167 people died when a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A300 crashed into a hillside as it approached Kathmandu.

The plane called the airport from Seti Gorge at 10:50 a.m. (05:05 GMT), according to a statement from the aviation authority. “Then it went down.” This was truly Nepal’s worst aviation accident.

Ajay K.C., a police officer, said that rescue workers were having trouble getting to the site of Nepal’s worst aviation accident, which is in a gorge between two hills near the airport of the tourist town.

“Half of the plane is on the hillside,” a local man named Arun Tamu told Reuters when he got to the crash site minutes after the plane went down. “The other half fell into the Seti river’s gorge.”

Khum Bahadur Chhetri said that he saw the plane coming from the roof of his house.

“I saw the plane shaking and moving left and right, and then its nose dropped and it went into the gorge,” Chhetri told Reuters. He also said that two passengers were taken to a hospital by locals.

The government has set up a group to look into what caused the crash leading to Nepal’s worst aviation accident, and the finance minister, Bishnu Paudel, told reporters that the group should have a report in 45 days of Nepal’s worst aviation accident.

Several accidents before Nepal’s worst aviation accident

Nearly 350 people have died in plane or helicopter crashes in Nepal since the year 2000. Nepal is home to eight of the 14 highest mountains in the world, including Everest, and sudden weather changes can make conditions dangerous.

Since 2013, Nepali airlines have not been able to fly in the airspace of the European Union because of safety concerns.

The Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement that there were three babies and three children on the twin-engine ATR 72 plane.

Five people from India, four people from Russia, one person from Ireland, one person from Australia, one person from France, and one person from Argentina were among the passengers in this Nepal’s worst aviation accident.

Nepal’s second-largest city, Pokhara, is nestled under the beautiful Annapurna mountain range. The trip from the country’s capital, Kathmandu, to Pokhara is one of the most popular tourist routes in the Himalayan country. Many people prefer to take a short flight instead of a six-hour drive over hilly roads.

Anup Joshi, a spokesman for Pokhara Airport, said that the plane crashed as it was getting close to the airport. He also said that the plane was flying at 12,500 feet and was on a normal descent. On Sunday, the sky was clear.

FlightRadar24 said on Twitter that the Yeti Airlines plane was 15 years old and had an old transponder that gave out bad information. It also said that the last signal from the transponder was received at 5:12 GMT at an altitude of 2,875 feet above mean sea level.

FlightRadar24 says that Pokhara Airport is about 2,700 to 2,800 feet above mean sea level.

The ATR72 is a popular twin-engine turboprop plane made by the European company ATR. It is made by a joint venture between Airbus and Leonardo of Italy. Yeti Airlines’ website says that it has six ATR72-500 planes in its fleet.

The company said on Twitter that ATR experts are working hard to help both the investigation and the customer.

When asked for comments, Airbus and Leonardo did not respond right away.

Yeti says on its website that it is a top domestic carrier. It has six ATR 72-500s, and the one that crashed was one of them. It also owns Tara Air, and the company says that between the two, they have the “widest network” in Nepal.
