A Comparison of the Golden Globe Awards and Oscars

Every year, movie fans look forward to awards season. Two of the biggest nights on the awards show circuit are the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards (aka the Oscars). While both shows celebrate excellence in film, there are some important differences between them that you should know. Let’s take a closer look.

History & Organization

The Golden Globe Awards have been around for over 70 years, having first been held in 1943. It’s an annual event hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which is made up of foreign journalists who cover events in Hollywood. The HFPA has about 90 members from around 60 countries worldwide, making it one of the most diverse organizations in Hollywood.

The Academy Awards have been held since 1929, making it even older than the Golden Globes. The Academy is a professional organization made up of entertainment industry professionals such as actors, directors, producers, etc., with its membership numbers numbering around 8,000 people.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards, films must be released before December 31st of any given year and garner at least seven positive reviews from HFPA members. There is no limit to how many nominations a single film can receive or how many films can be nominated in any given category.

For an Oscar nomination, films must also be released before December 31st of any given year but only need five positive reviews from Academy members to be eligible for consideration. Furthermore, each category can only have up to five nominees each year but this rule can sometimes be broken if there is a tie for fifth place.

The Voting Process

The voting process for each award show is also quite different. For instance, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) vote for nominees in each category for the Golden Globe Awards. This association consists of about 90 members from 55 countries around the world who are all dedicated to promoting international entertainment. As for Oscar nominations and winners, they are chosen by members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). This organization consists of over 8500 professionals from a variety of disciplines related to film production such as acting, directing, editing, producing etc.

The Eligibility Periods

Another difference between these two shows is that they have different eligibility periods which determine which films can be nominated or awarded on each show. For example, in order to be eligible for an Oscar nomination or win – a movie must have been released by December 31st in any given year – while movies up for a Golden Globe may have been released after July 1st and before December 31st in any given year.  Additionally, both awards shows use different criteria when it comes to awarding TV series/shows as well – with certain time frames having to be met depending on which ceremony you are looking at winning/nominating your TV project at!

 Different Categories & Winners

The Golden Globe Awards have both Film and Television categories which allow them to recognize outstanding achievements in both mediums on one night while the Academy Awards are strictly focused on film-based achievements only. The Golden Globe winners are chosen by ballots cast by HFPA members while Oscar winners are determined by voting among all active Academy members. Each award ceremony will honor different films and television series every year so you may find that you agree with some awards more than others!

At their core, both award ceremonies share one common goal—to recognize excellence in film and television—but they go about honoring those achievements differently due to their different histories and eligibility requirements. So if you’re looking for an interesting comparison between two major award shows this season—the Golden Globes versus Oscars—now you know what sets them apart! Whether you’re rooting for your favorite actors or filmmakers this season or just want to enjoy watching great movies get honored for their excellence, don’t forget to tune into these two award ceremonies!
