NorthEast United FC continued its discouraging run as 10-man Kerala Blasters FC gave them a crushing 2-1 defeat in the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League (ISL) match at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco, Goa on Friday night. Jorge Pereyra Díaz, Álvaro Vázquez scored the two goals for Kerala Blasters and Mohammed Irshad scored the only goal for NEUFC. With this win, Kerala Blasters moves into second place in the points list with 23 points. NEUFC continues to languish at the bottom with 10 points from 16 games.
The first half was clearly in the possession of the Highlanders and they also seemed to score several times. However, they couldn’t get past the Kerala keeper. Suhair VP was the standout player for NEUFC in the first half. Kerala Blasters also tried a few off-target shots, leaving the game tied at 0-0 at halftime. Kerala, however, looked different in the second half and played a very aggressive type of football and Jorge Pereyra Díaz broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute. They looked to have an easy win, but a red card for Ayush Adhikari of Kerala Blaster gave NEUFC a glimmer of hope.
However, the Highlanders were unable to take advantage of Alvaro Vazquez’s sensational goal in the 82.nd minute and sealed the deal for The Blasters. Mohammed Irshad pulled one back for the Highlanders in stoppage time but it was already too late meaning NEUFC’s poor run continued this season. Alvaro Vazquez was named Hero of the Match. NEUFC then plays against ATK Mohun Bagan on Saturday 12 February.
