Itanagar: Ace Arunachalee weightlifter Sambo Lapung added another feather to his illustrious cap after being crowned the national champion in the heavyweight category of the ongoing Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Youth, Junior and Senior Championship.
The event is held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Lapung competed in the 96kg weight category and lifted a total of 336kg (Snatch: 147kg + Clean & Jerk: 189kg) on Monday to win gold for Arunachal Pradesh.
Lapung is a former gold medalist of the South Asian Federation Games.
However, the vice president of the Arunachal Weightlifting Association, Daniel Teli, said Sambo’s record lift of 198kg in the clean and jerk event was rejected and rejected by the judges as not meeting the criteria for a good lift.
According to Teli, Lapung would have set a new national record if the elevator had not been overruled.
In the heavyweight category, Railway’s RV Rahul lifts a total of 335 kg (Snatch: 150 kg and Clean & Jerk: 185 kg) and took home the silver medal, while the bronze went to Jagdish of Services (SSCB), who won in lifted a total of 333 kg. kg (Snatch: 146 kg and Clean & Jerk: 187 kg).
Weightlifters from Arunachal have managed to win four gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the championship so far.
More than 800 weightlifters from 30 states will participate in the competition, the qualifier for the 5th edition of Khelo India Youth Games, 2022 to be held later this year.
This championship ends on March 31.
