New Delhi: Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen reached the final of the World Boxing Championship on Wednesday with a dominant victory over Brazil’s Caroline De Almeida in Istanbul.
Zareen, a former junior world champion, kept calm and completely dominated her rival for a unanimous 5-0 victory in the last four games of the 52kg competition.
Six-time champion MC Mary KomSarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha C are the only Indian female boxers to have won world title and now Zareen from Hyderabad has the chance to join the elite list.
India’s best performance at the event came in 2006, when the country won eight medals, including four gold, one silver and three bronze.
In the last edition, four Indian boxers returned home with medals Manju Rani took the silver, while Mary Kom took home an unrivaled eighth world medal in the form of a bronze.
Later in the day, Manisha Moun (57kg) and Parveen Hooda (63 kg) will compete in their respective semifinals.
