In Historic cold weather, migrant workers were dropped off at Vice President Kamala Harris’ home on Christmas Eve

NBC News reports that on Saturday night, three buses unloaded scores of migrants near the residence of Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington, D.C., as the area faced record low temperatures.

About 140 migrants from Central and South America and the Caribbean arrived in Washington, D.C. from Texas, according to Madhvi Bahl, an organiser with the Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network, who described the episode as “terrible.”

CNN said that some refugees had to endure 18-degree weather while wearing only t-shirts; they were eventually given blankets and transported to local shelters.

“Since April, the D.C. neighbourhood has welcomed Texas buses whenever they arrive. Christmas Eve and the weather are equally frigid “Amy Fischer, a Migrant Solidarity Mutual Aid Network worker, told CNN. We are always available to welcome newcomers.

The White House laid the blame on Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has previously dispatched buses of migrants to northern cities, although it has not been established that Abbott sent the vehicles that ended up at Harris’ home. The White House termed the deployment of the buses a “cruel, hazardous, and disgraceful stunt” in a statement.

“On Christmas Eve, Governor Abbott abandoned children on the side of the road in subfreezing temperatures without coordinating with any federal or local officials,” White House spokesman Abdullah Hasan told news outlets.

Hasan continued, “As we have repeatedly stated, we are willing to work with anyone – Republican or Democrat – on real solutions, such as the comprehensive immigration reform and border security measures President Biden sent to Congress on his first day in office. However, these political games achieve nothing and only put lives in danger.”

People has reached out to the office of Governor Greg Abbott for comment.

According to Politico, in September the democratic mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, declared a national emergency to provide services for migrants after the Republican-led states of Arizona and Texas began shipping migrants to Washington D.C., New York City, and Chicago.

Bowser stated, “We are putting in place a framework that will allow for a coordinated response with our partners.” “This will involve a programme to meet all buses, and given that the majority of people will continue on to their eventual destination, our primary focus is to ensure a humane, efficient, and welcoming process.”

In August, New York City Mayor Eric Adams also criticised the crime.

“Some of the families on the bus wished to travel to other areas, but were prohibited from doing so. They were made to board the bus “Adams stated, as reported by Politico. Our mission is to promptly determine each family’s needs and provide them with the desired help.
