Reliance plans to launch 5G smartphones for less than Rs 5000, and as sales pick up, bring down the cost to Rs 2500-3000 a unit, as said by a company official. The company plans to target 20-30 crore of the population who are using only 2G connection.
In the present scenario, the 5G smartphones are available in India in a price range beginning from Rs 27000. In the 43rd AGM, the Chairman and MD, Mukesh Ambani, emphasized to make India “2G-Mukt” and accentuated the need to move the 350 million 2G users to affordable smartphones. Ambani also informed about its tie-up with US tech giants to build an Android-based smartphone OS. He announced that Google would invest Rs 33,737 crore in the company for a 7.7% stake in Jio Platforms.
India does not have 5G services, nor has the Government allocated spectrum to the telecom operators for any field trials. As per reports, the company is working on its 5G equipment and asked the Dept of Telecom to allocate the spectrum for testing their product.
