Nagaland, Manipur to play friendly on June 4

Kohima: As the first of its kind, Kohima Town Club (KTC) will host a friendly football match between players from Nagaland and Manipur on June 4 to promote the sport and raise awareness about environmental protection. The competition is made possible by the Kohima Forest Division (KFD).

Both teams, consisting of about 20 players each, will play against each other at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima.

At the jersey launch ceremony held Thursday at the Kohima Forest Complex, KTC President Dr. Viketoulie Pienyü that the proposed friendly football match is scheduled to show the local players and reflect on the weakness of the sport in the state through the inter-state match.

Kohima Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rajkumar M shared that as part of Kohima Forest Division’s innovative initiative to spread environmental awareness, it is researching sports as a means of advocating for environmental protection among young people.

He announced that more than 2,000 saplings will be distributed to spectators during the first-come, first-come-first-time exhibition competition in the hopes that these saplings can be planted on World Environment Day (WED), which falls on June 5. .

The ranger said a green pledge will be made by the players and spectators prior to the game. Jerseys for the competition have also been modified with graphics and slogans that resonate with environmental protection.

Explaining further, he said the slogan “Because we only one earth” is boldly printed on the front of the jersey, in line with the WED 2022 “Only One Earth” theme, alongside the Kohima Forest Division logo.

The jersey also has schematic explanation of man’s relationship with nature, depicting the bird-tragopan state. Warm-up stripes, also known as climate stripes, a data visualization graphic that uses a series of colored stripes to represent long-term temperature trends, created in 2018 by Ed Hawkins, is also printed on the shirt that players from both teams will put on.

Among the players selected to play for KTC-XI, goalkeeper Neithovilie Chalieu, midfielder Haotingmang Victor Thomgsong and defender Berithung Humtsoe attended the jersey launch ceremony, which was chaired by Pelebeinuo Khezhie. The ceremony concluded with the expression of thanks expressed by Zedikuolie Kire, Chairman of the KTC Organizing Committee.
