Kohima: During the North East Regional Sports Week, which peaked on Tuesday in Manipur, Nagaland won a total of 20 medals, including 4 gold, 4 silver and 12 bronze.
Nagaland came in third with 20 medals in the medal tally behind Manipur and Assam. Archana Thapa, gold medalist in the 48 kg category, from Nagaland won the most promising boxer in the women’s category.
Nagaland was led by Zhopovi Zecho, District Sports Officer (DSO) Kohima as chef de mission. A total of 78 athletes with 11 officials from Nagaland took part in five disciplines, including archery, badminton, boxing, football and table tennis.
The week-long Northeast Regional Sports Week saw about 700 participants with coaches and officials from the seven northeastern states namely Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura.
The event was held to commemorate 75 years of independence and to celebrate Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, organized by the Youth Affairs and Sports Department and funded by the Northeastern Council (NEC).
In Badminton, Vikehietuo Kense and Tovali Shohe took bronze in the mixed doubles, and Chubanungla and Yashikala took bronze in the women’s doubles.
In boxing, Archana Thapa took gold in the 48 kg category, while Shila Devi took the gold medal in 52 kg. H. Jamuna Devi took silver in 57 kg, Sanju took silver in 63 kg, Nirmal took bronze in 60 kg and Monu took silver in 73 kg category.

Among the boys, Sohil took gold in the 60 kg category, Sachin silver in 57 kg, Ruokuovotuo bronze in 75 kg and Jhonny Lotha bronze in 70 kg.
In archery, Edikonu Rikha took gold in the recurve division. The men’s team won bronze medals in both the compound and recurve, and the women’s team took bronze in both the compound and recurve divisions.
In the mixed Archery team, Nagaland won a bronze medal in both compound and recurve.
In table tennis, Nagaland women’s team won bronze in team event.
In football, Nagaland women’s team lost their semi-final against Manipur 4-0.
