Short recap before diving into the future of the series. Virgin River is a drama series adapted from the Robyn Carr novel series. It’s about Mel, a young obstetrician and nurse practitioner who moves from the big city to a small, rustic town in Northern California.
Over the three seasons of the show, we’ve seen Mel get to know a wide variety of people in the city and record her roots. Of course, not everything has gone smoothly with a lot of drama.
Season 1 of Virgin River was first released on Netflix in December 2019 with subsequent releases in November 2020 and the most recently released season 3 in July 2021. Now the show returns again in July with its release on July 20, 2022.

Of course we reported on season 4 of Virgin River existed long before the official renewal came. Over the past few seasons, we’ve often heard that movie dates were scheduled before each renewal and that was the case again for Season 4.

Earlier in 2021, we reported that several production lists stated that the show would be returning for a fourth season. Better yet, we were later told that season 4 filming would begin in late July 2021.
The show films entirely in Vancouver, Canada.
Thanks to a message from Watershed Grill on Instagram, we also knew that filming was taking place there between August 17-18, 2021 (and several times after that).

Most of the cast and crew received goody bags after the shooting.
According to an Instagram Story (h/t HelloMagazine), Alexandra Breckenridge posted in February 2022 that another key part of the production process just finished telling followers:
“I was just going to finish my last ADR, for Virgin River, for those of you who don’t know ADR is, I think it stands for digital audio recording,”
This process is also known as “soundpost”, meaning Breckenridge probably went to an audio booth to record additional lines or even re-record some lines from the show in a quieter environment.
After “soundpost” we usually see shows arriving on Netflix in a few months, indicating that a release is just around the corner.
As mentioned above season 4 of Virgin River will be released worldwide on Netflix on July 20, 2022.

New Cast Members for Virgin River Season 4
At the end of October 2021, Netflix announced two new characters who will appear in Season 4 of Virgin River†
Mark Ghanimé, known for his stint on helix, will dr. Playing Cameron Hayek. He is Virgin River’s brand new doctor, who is “armed with eye-catching good looks, a razor-sharp intellect and a smile that could light up the world, Cameron makes an instant splash around town – especially with the ladies of Virgin River.”
Starring Kai Bradbury who will play Denny Cutler, Doc’s long-lost grandson. Denny comes up with a secret despite the best of intentions to rekindle a relationship with his grandfather.
One of the extras we’ll see in Season 4 is Rohain Arora who will play a waiter.
What to Expect from Virgin River Season 4
Mel’s big story going into season 4 is that she’s pregnant, though the real father has yet to be revealed. That is expected to be revealed at the end of Season 4.
Brady’s future seems to be in jeopardy as he is arrested for shooting Jack at the end of Season 2.
We will definitely see Hope return in Season 4 after her notable absence in Season 3. The reason she was absent for Season 3 was due to the fact that she wasn’t allowed to travel to the movies, but the show explained that she was visiting her aunt in another state. However, on the way back she was hospitalized after an accident in the storm when she returned to Virgin River†
Moving on to Doc Mullins (husband of Hope), he will continue to battle his illness (macular degeneration) that progresses slowly throughout Season 3. Sue Tenney, who serves as the showrunner for Virgin River, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what to expect from Hope in season 4 saying:
“For us, it’s recovery and what she’s dealing with: a traumatic brain injury. In a hospital and recovering, that’s not really where our show lives.
But we are very committed to what the truth of something is, so we go to the extreme of what is the best recovery for it.
We always stick to the parameters, medically speaking, but at the moment we also know what we like to do, which is complicated emotionally drama-based storytelling.”
According to an interview with the actress, it has been confirmed that Lynda Boyd will return for season 4 in the form of flashbacks.
Daniel Gillies also teased a return to the show, saying:
“Here’s what I’ll say, somewhat puzzling, the good news about being the deceased husband is that you can show up at any time. I’ll leave it at this.”
On the show’s Instagram account, they rarely give too many hints as to what to expect, but recently asked for suggestions for Jack’s specials board that’s outside the restaurant.
Will there be a season 5 & 6 Virgin River on Netflix?
As we said, there is definitely a season 5 of Virgin River coming. Details are small at this point and the script is likely still being put together.
In an Instagram live, Alexandra Breckenridge revealed that shooting was originally slated to begin in March 2022, but has subsequently been postponed.
“We were supposed to start in March, but it’s been pushed so I don’t know,” said the actress, adding: “Hopefully we might start in the summer. It would be nice to be in Vancouver in the summer. filming instead of in the winter, because to be honest, I’m pretty done filming in the winter.”
As for season 6, it’s really too early to say. It all depends on the performance on Netflix.
Speaking before the announcement to Us Weekly, showrunner Sue Tenney teased that they “want to do as many seasons as we can.” There’s a mountain of source material to cover in the coming seasons, so the door is wide open.
