NEUFC’s poor ISL campaign ends with a draw against East Bengal

This has been one of the worst ISL campaigns of all time NorthEast United FC† Reflecting their form throughout the season, the two bottom-seeded teams NEUFC and East Bengal played an uneventful draw on Monday, sharing points in match 104 of the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League at Tilak Maidan Stadium, Vasco da Gama. The Highlanders would have liked to end their otherwise disappointing campaign on a climax with a win, but it was not to be. Marco Sahanek scored the only goal for NEUFC, while Antonio Perosevic scored for SC East Bengal from a penalty.

The first half was anything but aggressive. Both sides have had a scorching season and didn’t want to end the season as the lowest seeded side. There was hardly any attack, but it was clearly the Kolkata team that created the most chances. However, in first-half added time, Marco Sahanek broke the deadlock to give NEUFC a lead going into halftime. However, the lead did not last long. An unfair clearance from Patrick Flottmann helped SCEB earn a penalty and Antonio Perosevic made no mistake. Both teams then tried to push hard but failed to create magic. NEUFC created more opportunities in the second half, but did not capitalize on them. Filling in for Patrick Flottmann, Marcelo Pereira combined well with Deshorn Brown and Suhair Vadakkepeedika to nearly win it for the Highlanders in the 73rd minute but East Bengal goalkeeper Sankar Roy did well. It was the same story for SC East Bengal and they continued to miss opportunities and the game ended in a draw. NEUFC’s Joe Zoherliana was named Hero of the Match.
