Now Discord voice chat rooms can also contain text messages

Discord enables a new special text chat feature for voice channels. Users of the platform can take advantage of the new feature, aptly named Text Chat in Voice Channels, by clicking on a new chat bubble icon for the voice channel they are participating in. The feature is a welcome quality of life change, similar to the chat window in Zoom calls that many are used to these days.

All non-community servers have text chat in voice channels enabled by default, while servers that have community enabled (under Server Settings > Community) have a period of time to log in or disable before ever going live. If no action is taken, the feature will be automatically enabled on all servers by June 15th.

Previously, Discord users involved in a voice channel had to create or locate a separate chat channel to send links or even quietly engage the group. It can often be annoying because the name of a corresponding text channel can be very different from the name of the voice channel, such as #voice-chat-spam-2. Someone would have to spell out the name of a text channel to join, or you would have to message users directly.

Those who manage community servers will also get new tools to help them transition to the new Text Chat feature in voice channels. They can set roles to decide who can use the feature on their servers and also enable/disable the feature bit by bit for different voice channels. Permissions for the new voice channel chat are also in place and work in the same way as other text channel permissions to manage messages, comments, external emoji and stickers and other items.
