Police: At least 2 shooters kill 6, wound 12 in Sacramento

Sacramento experienced its second mass shooting in less than a week as two gunmen opened fire early Sunday as bars closed for the night and crowds emptied onto downtown streets. Six people were killed, and 12 were wounded, police said.

The victims were three men and three women, said Police Chief Kathy Lester. Several hours after the shooting began around 2 a.m., their bodies still lay on the pavement. Police searched a crime scene spanning multiple city blocks for clues to locate the shooters.

There were at least four wounded who were hospitalized with serious injuries. Sergio Harris, 38, has been identified as the sole victim; police have not yet provided a cause of death.

Kay Harris, 32, told The Associated Press hours after the shooting that she had been asleep when she received a call saying she thought her brother had been killed. According to her, Sergio Harris was at the London nightclub nearby where the shooting took place.

In an interview with The Sacramento Bee, Sergio Harris’ mother said the family hadn’t heard from him since the shooting.

It was early Sunday morning when she said, “We just want to find out what happened to him.”. “Not knowing anything is so difficult.”

The public was encouraged to come forward with information and videos that may help authorities locate the suspects as investigators examined hundreds of pieces of evidence – much of which was documented on the street with blue and yellow markers.

In her 15 months as a councilmember, Katie Valenzuela has responded to many phone calls reporting violence in her district. At the news conference, she told reporters that she awoke at 2:30 a.m. because of a phone call.

In the past five weeks, Sacramento has experienced two mass shootings. In a Sacramento church on Feb. 28, a father killed his three daughters and a chaperone, as well as himself. While under a restraining order that prohibited him from possessing a firearm, David Mora, 39, had a homemade semiautomatic rifle-style weapon.

A number of bars and restaurants can be found in the area where the killings occurred on Sunday. A big-name concert venue and the home of the Sacramento Kings, it is anchored by the Golden One Center. Development has been a top priority for the city.

Video posted on social media suggested that an altercation had taken place before the shooting in California’s capital city. An investigator is unsure whether the fight led to the shooting, according to a police spokesperson, Sgt. Zach Eaton.

The fourth-floor resident of Citizen Hotel, Kelsey Schar, reported hearing gunshots and seeing flashes after hearing them. Schar said that when she looked out of the window, she saw a man running and shooting.

“At this point, all we do know is that another mass shooting has occurred, leaving families with lost loved ones and multiple victims injured, as well as a community in mourning,” he said.

A community activist, Berry Accius, said he arrived at the scene soon after the shooting.

As soon as I saw them, I felt like a victim. An injured girl had a lot of blood on her. A girl removed glass from her body, a young girl screaming, “They killed my sister.” A mother ran up, “Has my son been killed?” he said.
