The full story

Over the weekend, my partner and I decided it was finally time to upgrade our Wi-Fi router. We were happily working on a relatively old OnHub router until we got a warning from Google that it was shutting down the OnHub from next December. We complained a little and then bit that bullet and used a discount offered by Google to buy a Nest WiFi router and point.

After deciding to have a lazy Memorial Day weekend, we figured Monday would be the perfect day to finally switch from the old router to the new one — and it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes, However?

Yes correct.

I won’t go into the various minor issues we encountered before we actually got everything working. (Tip for OnHub owners: Don’t just disconnect your OnHub from your modem before you start setting up — turn it off completely.) But after a few random annoyances, we finally got everything set up. We sat back and my partner asked Google to set a timer for 15 minutes.

The response: ”I can’t set a timer right now. Please try again in a few seconds.”

He tried again and got the same answer. He asked it for information – that worked fine; asked for the weather – no problem; told the speaker to lower the volume – no response at all.

Out of curiosity, I told Google to set a timer. No problem, timer set. It also lowered the volume for me.

Besides the satisfaction I got from the idea that I liked our new router better, this was clearly a problem. The Google support page had the usual “delete everything” solution, which we didn’t really want to do. Finally, after some searching, I found a solution that worked for us on Google’s community pages.

Here’s something to try if your Google Assistant doesn’t set a timer for you or perform other specific tasks:

How do you fix it

  • In the Home app, select the Settings icon
  • Tap on Home information > Home address
  • Tap Delete > Delete† This will completely remove your current residential address.
  • Tap Add home address
  • As you start typing, Google will start displaying addresses; choose yours
  • Tap Next > Done

Now any timers or other requests that Google Assistant has ignored should work. Good luck!
