Cairo: Indian shooting champion Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event, opening the country’s account on Tuesday in the first ISSF World Cup of the year.
The Asian Games gold medalist shot 16 in the gold medal match, finishing ahead of Germany’s Michael Schwald (6).
The bronze in the event was bagged by Artem Chernousov of Russia, whose flag was removed from the country for his involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Saurabh, 19, an Olympian who also has a youth Olympic gold medal to his name, finished third in the qualifying stage of the men’s 10m air pistol with a total of 584 points, going through to elimination as one of the eight best shooters. †
He topped the final stage relay 1 with a score of 38, moving him through to the medal match, which was contested by the final four archers. There he surpassed again with a score of 42.5.
Esha Singh, Shri Nivetha and Ruchita Vinerkar will represent India in the women’s 10m air pistol event.
More than 500 archers from 60 countries participate in the Cairo World Cup, which has 20 sets of medals on offer.
