Birmingham: Ace Indian boxer Shiva Thapa started his commonwealth games campaign on a rousing note by beating Pakistani Suleman Baloch in the first round of the 63.5 kg category, here on Friday.
Thapa, 28, barely broke a sweat as he recorded a comprehensive 5-0 win over Baloch to advance to the light welterweight pre-quarter finals.
Thapa, a five-time Asian Championship medalist, was technically far superior to Baloch, delivering a flurry of sharp punches to his opponent.
The former World Cup bronze medalist also defended well as he danced through the ring with ease. At one point, Baloch leapt forward to punch the Indian, but Thapa moved effortlessly as the Pakistani boxer fell to the canvas.
