Sweet Magnolias is one of Netflix’s best internal feel-good series, so the confirmation that we’re returning to Serenity for a third season should come as no surprise. Here’s everything we know about it so far Sweet Magnolias season 3 gearing up to start production this summer, what to expect and how season 2 of? Sweet Magnolias performed on Netflix.
The series is based on Sherryl Woods’ novel series and while there has been some divergence between the story told in the book and what we’ve seen on screen, there’s plenty more source material for the show to draw from. So let’s dig in Sweet Magnolias season 3 opportunities and what to expect.
We first debuted in May 2020 and finally got a second season of Sweet Magnolias, just a few months shy of two years after its first premiere.
Will Netflix be refreshed Sweet Magnolias for a season 3?
Official Renewal Status: Officially renewed in May 2022
Two months after season 2 dropped, we still had to hear about an official renewal or cancellation, but in early May we got the thumbs up that more episodes were on the way. Season 3 is again expected to be 10 episodes long.
The confirmation was followed by the Sweet Magnolias Writers Tweet Twitter Page†
“We’re going back to Serenity, all of you! We are so happy to share that we have a Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias. I can’t wait to welcome you all home.”
Unlike some other shows in the genre, Sweet Magnolias hasn’t been refreshed in advance, so it comes down to viewership and the “stickiness” of the series.
What we mean by that is that Netflix will look at the number of viewers of the show, among other things, when coming up with what is referred to as adjusted viewing share.
Our prediction for renewal was that the show maintained a solid foundation and is one of the few shows that succeeds in reaching a broad audience in the United States and therefore was very likely to be renewed.
When will Sweet Magnolias Season 3 start shooting and when will it be released?
The production dates have yet to be fully finalized, but we’re hearing that now filming will start sometime in summer 2022† It will film again in Covington and Atlanta, Georgia in the United States.
In early June 2022, the team behind the show was looking for new locations. In an Instagram post, Sheryl Anderson stated:
“I love planning and planning season 3, with friends, old and new!!!”
On July 1, star of the show Joanna Garcia posted on Instagram, revealing that she’s redyed her hair to reprise her role in the upcoming third season, suggesting filming is imminent.
In the post, Swisher said:
“‘Maddie’s’ lob is back 💇🏻♀️ Can only mean one thing… #sweetmagnoliasnetflix #season3”
Assuming the show follows a similar filming pattern to Season 2 (in production for 3-4 months), then it should wrap up in the fall, meaning a mid-2023 release date for Netflix seems most realistic.

What to expect from? Sweet Magnolias season 3
Season 2 ends with a lot of cliffhangers that continue the tradition of Season 1.
Season 2 ended with Maddie, Helen and Dana Sue mourning the passing of Miss Frances (Cindy Karr). After the funeral, we see an unexpected event involving both a proposal and a confrontation at the restaurant that leads to Cal being led away handcuffed. We also know that someone has returned after the main trio saw footage of tires being slashed on Sullivan’s van.
Helen (played by Heather Headley) had a rough ride in Season 2 with some traumatic events, but the season ended when Ryan proposed to her. Season 3 will likely start with the decision she makes.
In an interview with TVLine, Sheryl J. Anderson answered some of the burning questions many have after Season 2.
When asked who had cut Dana Sue’s ties, she said, “I’ll just say she has a past in common with our ladies and some other people in town,” adding, “She’s been gone for a while, but she’s come back with an agenda. She’s come home to settle some scores.”
Anderson also said we could “possibly” see Victoria’s return and suggested we could also see other “troublemakers” return in the future. Dana Sue’s relationship was also discussed, where Anderson said three-way dance is likely to remain complicated.
Speaking to Glamor, Anderson said there isn’t one question that goes to Season 3 compared to Season 2, except that the big question is about an extension, saying, “I hope the most important question everyone will have at the end of season. two has is: are they going to get a season three?”
In addition to the renewal confirmation, it was announced that stars JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley would all reprise their roles.
While we wait for more news on the third season, Netflix is still running its book club hosted by Uzo Aduba (Orange is the new black) and Sweet Magnolias the book was in focus in February 2022.
