The reasons why ‘Lucifer’ might leave Netflix by 2031

Published on

Lucifer’s return to Netflix was one of the biggest in the company’s history, and the show is now available in most parts of the world. But we’ve learned that the show may leave Netflix as soon as 2031.
Lucifer was originally on FOX, but Netflix brought it back for three big seasons, even though it was only supposed to be two. All six seasons are now on Netflix, with a few exceptions like Netflix Germany.
The show was made by Tom Kapinos, and Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Kevin Alejandro, and D. B. Woodside were the main characters.

When will Lucifer leave Netflix?

Our research showed that Lucifer is currently set to leave Netflix around the world on September 10, 2031.

Why that date, though?

Well, superfans of the show already know that was the exact day season 6 of Lucifer was added to Netflix in 2021. This tells us that Netflix has the rights to the show for the rest of its life plus ten years.
Many people don’t know that Netflix Originals can leave the service, but we’ve kept track of dozens of titles that have already done so. All of them were Netflix Originals.

Why could Lucifer leave Netflix?

Even though not all Netflix Originals will leave the service at some point, a lot of them will because the rights to them belong to someone else and Netflix has only rented them for a certain amount of time.
In this case, Warner Bros. Television owns the rights, and Warner Bros. Discovery also owns DC Comics, which is where the IP comes from.
From what we’ve found, the ten-year removals are standard for all Warner Bros. TV shows that Netflix has picked up over the years. The shows will disappear exactly 10 years after their last season was added to the service. This is true of books like Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The Kominsky Method, The Sandman, and Keep Breathing, just to name a few.
We don’t know where Warner Bros. Discovery will be in the 2030s, of course. As we saw with Lilyhammer, shows can be renewed, but since Warner Bros. Discovery may want Lucifer to boost its own HBO Max, it’s not a given that a renewal will happen here.
