Guwahati: In one of the largest disturbs this FIFA world cup, Brazil’s campaign came to an end after losing to Croatia in the quarterfinals. The Croatian side recorded another sensational victory after a dramatic late comeback in extra time and then a penalty shoot-out.
Croatia defied all odds to secure a place in the semi-finals by winning 4-2 on penalties on Friday after the match had finished 1-1 in 120 minutes.
On a night of suspense and drama, Brazilian superstar Neymar thought he had won the match when he scored an extra-time goal for the five-time world champion. But the left-footed equalizer by Croatia substitute Bruno Petkovic three minutes from the end of extra time put his side level and broke thousands of Brazilian hearts in Doha.
After a thrilling penalty shootout, the Croatians won the quarter-final to eliminate Brazil, who were regarded as favorites to lift the World Cup trophy.
Brazilian superstar Neymar was in tears after the game as he reflected on what could be his last World Cup. That heartbreak, however, led to one of the most sane moments of the tournament, when a child, later identified as Leo, the son of Croatian winger Ivan Perisic, ran over to comfort his father’s opponent.
The boy was initially stopped by security, but was let through by Neymar for a handshake and a hug.
