When the leader of the original Rangeela, Urmila Matondkar was asked to comment on the possibility of a remake of the movie, she said that some remakes are made quite well and some others have not lived up to the expectations.
With Ram Gopal Verma’s Rangeela’, Urmila became a household name. She opened up on the potential remake of the film and said that there are no hard and fast rules for remaking a film. She said that it wouldn’t be fair to take one rule for all movies. She added that some remakes were brilliant but some failed to impress, as people could not forget the original, as the roles and characters made such an impact on the minds of the people. It is not easy to recreate that every time.
In Rangeela, Urmila played the role of a middle–class girl, Mili, who aspired to be an actor. The movie is a love-triangle, as her childhood buddy Munna, played by Aamir Khan, and the lead actor of the film, Raj, played by Jackie Shroff, both fall in love with her. The movie was a box-office hit and also critically appreciated.
Urmila began her career as a child artist and had worked in movies like Karm and Masoom. As a lead heroine, she was launched in 1991, in Narsimha. She has also starred in movies like Judaai, Satya, Pyaar tune kya Kiya, Khoobsurat, Bhoot, and Ek Hasina Thi. After a long break, she made a comeback kind of on the big screen with a special song in Blackmail, in 2018. The song was ‘Bewafa Beauty’.
