Lausanne: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken note of the “significant progress” made by the IOA in resolving its governance issues, but until the election process is completed on Dec. 10, the global body will not decide whether to withdraw the warning of a ban on India.
In September, the IOC had instructed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to hold elections by December or face a ban.
The Supreme Court of India then appointed former Justice L. Nageswara Rao to amend IOA’s constitution and prepare the Electoral College.
“With regard to India, the IOC Board of Governors has received a report on the situation of NOC of India following the decision of the Board of Governors in September 2022 to issue a final warning to NOC,” said James McLeod, director of Olympic Solidarity and NOC. Relations of the IOC at the meeting of the Board of Governors here.
“The Executive Board has taken note of the significant progress made in recent weeks in implementing an agreed roadmap, including the adoption of the revised IOA Bylaws, aimed at improving IOA’s internal governance in close collaboration and coordination with a former judge appointed by the Supreme Court of India to oversee the entire process.”
“The EB will wait until the final process until the final step of the process, which is the IOA election which will take place on December 10, and will ensure that they are duly completed,” he added.
A potential ban could seriously affect next year’s IOC session, set to take place in Mumbai in September or October, after it was postponed following the warning.
“…the IOC delegates, the IOC administration to confirm the position of the IOC afterwards and also whether the 2023 IOC session will take place in Mumbai,” said McLeod.
