Mercedes’ Wolff Hails ‘Special driver’ Lewis Hamilton after landmark F1 Win

Toto Wolff, the Mercedes team Principal, paid tribute to Hamilton after the Brit surpassed Schumacher’s record of F1 victories. Hamilton has racked up his 92nd win, at the Portugues Grand Prix on Sunday. Wolff said that it often happens that the driver’s achievements might not be fully appreciated until after he would retire.

Wolff and Hamilton’s relationship started in 2013 when the latter joined Mercedes. Since then he has registered 71 wins for the company. But for 2017, where he registered 9 wins, he has made ten victories in each year. Wolff said that there are only two names- Michael in his era, and Lewis in his time. Sometimes people realize the achievements of a driver only after when the career ends for them.

The comment comes from Wolff concerning the overlooking of Lewis’ achievements. When Lewis had won his sixth title the previous year, Hain had written to Boris Johnson to make the case for an upgrade on the MBE awarded to the driver 12 years ago. But it was overlooked.
