Before Monday Night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams, the Green Bay Packers announced who would not play. Because the injury report was so short, there weren’t really any surprises.
Since there were no moves up from the practice squad this week, Shemar Jean-Charles, David Bakhtiari, Caleb Jones, Krys Barnes, and Jonathan Ford were all inactive.
Since Jean-Charles came back from his injury, he hasn’t played. This is likely because Innis Gaines was added to the 53-man roster and took over special teams’ duties. This means, though, that the Packers only have four cornerbacks who can play right now.
Zach Tom will be back at left tackle, where he did a great job against the Bears, now that Bakhtiari is out. The Packers’ offensive line doesn’t have to work as hard without Aaron Donald. Donald has once again been one of the best interior pass rushers in football, and the Rams defense as a whole has been one of the best at stopping the run, though they had trouble doing that last week against Las Vegas without Donald.
Even though Christian Watson has made the passing game stronger recently, this team still needs to do well on the ground if it wants to score points. Here you can find out more about that.
Jones, on the other hand, just got off the NFI list, and Ford hasn’t played at all this season. The most surprising thing is probably that Barnes isn’t playing, but this also happened in Chicago, where De’Vondre Campbell was back on the field and depth wasn’t as much of an issue. Eric Wilson and Isaiah McDuffie are also linebackers and play on special teams, so Barnes hasn’t had much to do.
Romeo Doubs will be back for the Packers this week, giving Aaron Rodgers another weapon. He should draw some attention away from Christian Watson and give the running game and other pass-catchers more chances.
Darnell Savage will also be back, and it will be interesting to see if he stays on the bench. Before he got hurt in Philadelphia, Savage was only playing in the dime defense. In Green Bay’s base nickel defence, Adrian Amos and Rudy Ford played safety, and Keisean Nixon played in the slot.
With the Packers’ playoff hopes barely hanging on, winning out is a must, as is receiving some help from Seattle, Washington, and/or the New York Giants along the way.
