YouTube spokesperson Farshad Shadloo told Reuters that YouTube is less likely to recommend Russian state media to users. Some of these channels, including RT, will also be restricted in Ukraine due to “a government request”, possibly in response to the call by Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Affairs, Mykhailo Fedorov, for YouTube to block Russian propaganda on the platform. . YouTube started labeling videos posted by state networks in 2018.

While YouTube says it’s banning RT from running ads, it remains unclear what other channels have also been temporarily demonetized. Such as Politics chief technology correspondent Mark Scott points out: on Twittersome state-sponsored channels still seem to have ads. The edge asked YouTube for a list of affected channels, but didn’t hear back immediately.

Facebook, which is owned by Meta, has already moved to pause ads from state-backed Russian media outlets on its platform, while Twitter has suspended all ads in both Ukraine and Russia to help ensure the visibility of public safety information. Russia has since restricted access to Facebook and Twitter. While Russia hasn’t blocked YouTube yet, it has threatened to ban the platform entirely due to the removal of two RT channels in September.
